Carrahane Strand
is an irregularly-shaped expanse of sand and shallow water on the
landward side of the dunes.
This is a quiet place of wild flowers and skylarks. |

It was at Rahoneen
that we passed two republican crosses. The 1921 treaty negotiated
with the British, which created the 26-county Irish Free State in
1922, was rejected by die-hard republicans. On 28th June 1922 they
rose against the Free State government. The Irish Civil War was
fought mostly in Dublin and the south-west. The government forces
prevailed, and in April 1923 the republicans declared an unconditional
cease-fire, though they retained their opposition to the new state. |
